Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections. Doxycycline treats urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea and syphilis), gum infections, diseases (like periodontitis), and others. Besides this, Doxycycline also treats acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. However, it does not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.
Doxycycline being an antibiotic prevents the growth of bacterial cells (the bad ones!) by preventing the formation of the outer protein layer of bacteria (cell wall) responsible for bacteria's growth and multiplication. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. it acts against various bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e. it stops bacteria growth but does not kill them.
Doxycycline should only be taken if advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food but should be consumed at a fixed time for the best results. You should complete the course of Doxycycline as your doctor prescribes for better results. Doxycycline is pregnancy category D (high risk) medicines, so its use in pregnant and nursing mothers is not recommended. Use of Doxycycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 8 years) may cause teeth staining (yellow-grey-brown). Do not consume alcohol as it may cause excessive drowsiness when taken along with Doxycycline. Before using Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you ever had an allergy to Doxycycline, have kidney problems, liver problems, swollen food pipe (esophagitis) or muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). Please do not drink alcohol with Doxycycline as it may increase the unpleasant side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.
You should take Doxycycline caution when taking doxycyclineDoxycycline is taken orally with or without food. The dose and length of treatment aredepending on the patient's age, the severity of the lesions and the clinical response to treatment. The full course of treatment is not complete until the full benefit is seen and the patients should consult their doctor.
Doxycycline should not be taken for more than a few days. Do not take a double dose of Doxycycline than prescribed by the doctor. double dosing may cause reduced effectiveness of treatment. This is more serious with longer treatment and you should consult your doctor before using this medicine if you have severe or progressing illness. Using this medicine with the sudden decline of renal function can cause renal problems which could lead to patients fainting, breathing difficulties and an increased risk of infection. Please seek immediate medical advice if you experience these symptoms.Doxycycline should not be used in the treatment of malaria. The symptoms of malaria include symptoms like itching (redness), fever, swollen lymph nodes, abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, paralysis, and skin rash. Please inform your doctor about your history of severe fever, swollen scalp skin, swollen heart, weakness or confusion, slow or irregular heartbeat and rashes before taking Doxycycline.
Doxycycline should not be used in the treatment of other types of bacterial infections, e.g. sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea), eye infections (e.g. chlamydia), gingivostomatoides (i.e. the back passage of the penis) or any other sexually transmitted infections. Use of Doxycycline with other medicines containing cetyl alcohol (e.g. cetyltrisal hydroxide, cetyl alcohol) or alcohol may cause stomach bleeding and may occur even if you feel well. If you are taking Doxycycline with other medicines please inform your doctor as soon as possible when you start taking Doxycycline because they may make the medicine less effective. Please consult your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms.
Doxycycline is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under the age of 18 or over 65 years if you are taking the anti-malarial, medicine to treat leptospirosis or the prodrug of artesunate. Doxycycline should not be used in patients below 18 years if any risk factors for liver disease have not been considered.Doxycycline may increase skins breaks or bleeding. If you experience any of these while taking Doxycycline, consult your doctor immediately.
